Summary/Abstract: The connections between medicine and ascetic practices in Late Antiquity have been made in modern research, interested especially in how medical knowledge of the time influenced the philosophical and theological discourses. Although the nexus between Galen's ideas and Jerome's discourse on asceticism has already been noted in current studies, the actual comparison between the cited texts and their original context has not yet been discussed. The aims of this paper are to analyze Jerome's thinking about asceticism, with a focus on the biblical texts that underpin it, and also to identify the role played by Galen's ideas in shaping the new discourse on asceticism.
