Summary/Abstract: V. Sirutavičius in his review discussed and evaluated Aleksandra Teresė Veličkienė’s and Sigita Kaikarienė’s study “Grand, Cruel and Despised History of Rome. The Evolution of Politics, Law and Moral Values ”, published in 2009. This book by the Lithuanian authors is an original and innovative publication meant for university students, school and university teachers as well as for those who are interested in the history of ancient Rome. The book discusses the issues of politics, morality, legal system and social life in ancient Rome, the development of military organization and the principles of democracy, freedom, legal system, and state government. The reviewer’s critical comments mainly concentrated on the research object which, because of its extent and complexity, was not fully disclosed, on the title of the book which, because of its formulation, did not correspond to historical realia of ancient Rome, and on poor estimation of political and economic processes. These comments by no means diminish the value of this book; it will be beneficial for all those who are interested in the history of ancient Rome.
