Summary/Abstract: The article aims to evaluate and characterize a series of editions of “The Chronicle of Šiauliai” as well as historical material published in it. In 1930, Šiauliai local ethnographic society initiated the publication of “The Chronicle of Šiauliai”; it was edited by a famous culture figure and ethnographer Peliksas Bugailiškis. The aim of “The Chronicle of Šiauliai” was to document the most important facts and events in Šiauliai city and Šiauliai district. During the interwar period, five volumes of the Chronicle appeared, and the last volume of this period was devoted to the survey of the historical development of Šiauliai city and region while the first ones dealt with informational and ethnographic issues. In addition, the volumes contained certain historical material as well. The volumes of “The Chronicle of Šiauliai” published materials concerning the history of Seda and Žagarė as well as Tsarist period documents and texts, which had been kept in Šiauliai “Aušra” museum. One of the most important historical works, published in the Chronicle, was Jonas Puzinas’ article “Šiauliai city: historical features”. After the restoration of independence, the publication of “The Chronicle of Šiauliai” was renewed by the decree of Šiauliai city council. The year 1994 saw the edition of the 6th volume of the Chronicle, 1996 – the seventh, and 1999 – the eighth, and these volumes were edited by J. Sireika. It should be mentioned that the Chronicle changed in its content and character. It published more of historical and survey articles in contrast to the interwar period when it mainly dealt with the events in Šiauliai district. The last two volumes of the Chronicle were prepared and edited by V. Šiukščienė, “Aušra” museum worker. Researchers from Šiauliai university as well as other scientists contributed their articles for publication, among them A. Gumuliauskas, G. Mažeikis, B. Salatkienė, T. Tamošiūnas, and others. Assoc. prof. R. Trimonienė from Šiauliai university prepared and published historical documents in the last volumes of the Chronicle. Though “The Chronicle of Šiauliai” changed considerably during long years of its existence, one aspect remained unaltered, i. e. its historical character and attempts to present a wealth of historical material.
