Summary/Abstract: György Kurtág’s String Quartet Op. 1 is the first work that attests to the new aesthetic adopted and assumed by the composer from the age of thirty, for the rest of his life. This turning point has been analysed from countless perspectives in musicology. Among the parallels brought forward was the expressionist image in Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis, in a study by Peter Hoffmann. This study presents for the first time the affinity of Kurtág's works with Tudor Arghezi's poetry, with which the composer was familiar from his youth. The comparative analysis presents similarities between the two creators, reflected in their orientation towards the expressiveness of the elements underlying a language, in similar poetic images of spiritual revival, in an originality springing from a proper appreciation of tradition and from a compelling interest in an archetypal dimension, under the sign of an assumed identity.
