Summary/Abstract: Anyone who has a sibling knows how special that relationship can be and how strongly it can affect our lives. Scientists concluded that the bond between brothers and sisters goes beyond what family actually is. Experiences with siblings can have an impact on the overall development of children and adolescents, with siblings providing something that parents and friends simply cannot. Though their love or hate, envy or compassion, and closeness or rivalry formed in childhood, these bonds last throughout life. This inconsistency, normally present in other interpersonal relationships is emphasizes especially in sibling relationships. This is the reason why that relationship can be full of love and care but also extremely hostile and burdened with rivalry. All this shows that the knowledge about the complexity of those relationships has been present for a long time, but it also points us to the doubts of children and parents in everyday life when they find themselves faced with the force of unexpected opposite feelings, rivalry and jealousy that are not always easy to understand. Birth order, gender, and differences in the birth years of siblings are variables by which children in the family differ, and research into the genetics of personality behavior constantly points to the importance of such influence.
