Summary/Abstract: In this paper the author analyses the legal content and achievements of the Amsterdam Treaty, amending the Maastricht Treaty. In the first part he explains the conditions leading to the conclusion of the Amsterdam Treaty. In the second part, the author analyses new amendments to the Amsterdam Treaty and their impact on the legal structure of the European Union. The author concludes that the Amsterdam treaty represents a very important, although limited step, leading to the general reform of European Union.
