Summary/Abstract: In the eighth century the very foundation of the Church was shaken by the struggle against the holy images. The destruction caused in the area of Byzantine Empire by the brutal policy of the emperors from the Isaurian dinasty was so violent that many of the oldest objects of Christian worship were lost forever. The condemnation of the iconoclasm by the orthodox popes, alongside the patriarchs of Jerusalem, Alexandria and Antiochia and the confessors from the East, was the first step towards the full restoration of the cult of icons, Saints and relics, which will occur during the reign of the holy empresses Irene and Theodora.
