Kranjčević: Wantonnes and bittemess, in meter too

Summary/Abstract: Following the suggestion of Z. Škreb's remarks on S. S. Kranjčević 's use of a meter (the 16-syllable line), this paper systematic ally exarnines the same poet's handling of two relatively rere Serbo-Croatian meters: the so-called Polisch 13-syllable line (7 [4+3] +6) and the three-colon 12-syllable line (4+4+4, originally the 10nger1ine of the folk laments). Kranjčević's usage is seen in relation to the tradition (for this purpose a peculiar departure in the use of the longer lament line in written Serbian and Croatian poetry is also briefly described), and a general characterization of the way Kranjčević deals with the traditional semantic charge of metrical forms is attempted in conclusion.
