Summary/Abstract: The article examines four schools of ancient philosophy in relation to the environment of the garden and walks in it. On the one hand, the garden represents an exit both from the urban environment and from everyday activities, as well from instrumental thinking. On the other hand, an everyday practice such as walking is associated with a “bypass,” that is, with metaphysical thinking. For example, when Epicurus speaks of pleasures, he is not paying attention to the satisfaction of physical needs, but to mental activities cultivated among friends. Zeno chose the Poecile Stoia for his lessons and discussions because there he had the opportunity to meet both virtue and truth while walking with his students. As for the Peripatetics, the walk has several levels. Here students learned by following the teacher on the covered galleries. Later it was developed into empirical research and field research. The Platonic Academy as a garden outside – walks through the forests of imagination and fiction, which seem to be an alternative to philosophy.
