Setting up your own business as a manifestation of entrepreneurship in Poland (with particular emphasis on the Nowosądecczyzna Region)

Summary/Abstract: This article aims to show the entrepreneurial attitude among people who decide to start a business. The paper presents the development of the concept of entrepreneurship and the changing conditions in Poland, which affected the process of setting up and running a business. In addition, an attempt was made to show the influence of entrepreneurship on the increase in the number of business activities in Poland. On the basis of statistical data the dynamics of setting up a business and its diversification were examined. Using these measures it was shown that in Poland from 1995 to the present small entities employing up to 9 people and established by natural persons dominate in the structure. Małopolskie voivodeship is diversified in this respect. Especially big cities concentrate economic entities. In the region of Nowy Sącz (the district and the city of Nowy Sącz), which was the subject of particular interest, the trend concerning the increase in the number of business entities relates to the trend for the whole country. Both in the city and the whole district the number of private sector entities has been systematically increasing, while the public sector constitutes a negligible share of the total. The service companies are dominant, but in Nowy Sącz district their share is slightly smaller (59%) than in the city of Nowy Sącz (79%).
