Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to analyze gender differences in value system of the Bulgarians in their individual and sociocultural aspects. The results from the empirical research show that value differences of the Bulgarian men and women match the traditional social-gender roles (instrumental/autonomous orientation of men and expressive/communicative orientation of women). The psychosocial variables: age, educational level and socio-professional status do not moderate gender differences in the significance of value categories. An attempt to explain the differences in value priorities, both of men and women, is also made. The specific influence of sociocultural context is revealed through cross-cultural comparison of gender differences in value categories between the Bulgarian and an Israeli sample. Key words: gender differences, value system, instrumental/autonomous orientation, expressive/communicative orientation, sexual-role stereotypes, social change situation, cross-cultural comparison, sociocultural context
