Summary/Abstract: This text is provoked by my research interest towards the Bulgarian city and, in particularly, the changes in the urban neighborhoods after 1989. It is an attempt to analyze the ways of construction of the Bulgarian city by the weekly newsreels. In the cases of the City of Stalin, the City of Dimitrov and the ‘City of socialism’ the three acts of ‘creation’ of city are researched with ethnosociological means through the ritual of the gift exchange and giving a name. My hypothesis is that it is one of the main tools for ideological construction of the city and the urban project of the State by the official weekly newsreels. These cases are representative for the main periods of the urban planning and development in Bulgaria between 1944 and 1974. The urban visions, constructed by the weekly newsreels are interesting in the sense that through its cities the society projects its self-understanding in the future. In the text are analyzed three versions of the city of socialism: the re-named city – the case of Varna – Stalin (a newsreel from 1949), the new built city – the Town of Dimitrovgrad (a newsreel from 1956) and the town-in-the city – the case of the new high-raised building neighborhood – Mladost (1973).
