Summary/Abstract: The provisions of applicable law, especially the Act on Assistance, regulate the issue ofproviding help to people in a difficult, critical situation, unable to overcome difficultiesusing their own abilities, competences and resources. Among these people there arepeople leaving prison who need help in meeting their basic needs, often unable tocount on support in the family environment. Former prisoners face a number of barriersin the process of their adaptation and social re-adaptation, which make it difficultor impossible for them to exist in the open environment. Living in a closed environment,an institution of a total nature, results in the prisoner being prizonized, his adaptationto the rules of a different, unknown world of prison. It disturbs self-esteem,usefulness and agency by limiting the possibility of making decisions and responsibilityfor them in various spheres of life. Convicts face stigma and exclusion from society. Forthe readaptation process to run properly, these people need constructive, individualizedsupport aimed at their activation and development of self-help based on the useof their own potential. Such assistance can be provided by professionally prepared,aware of the importance of the convict’s social readaptation process and the accompanyingbarriers and possibilities of social workers who will be an activating supportfor their client, a person cooperating in the search for solutions to problems, educators,but also endowed with empathy and respect for others another man.
