Summary/Abstract: Bulgaria is a country with one of the richest immunization calendars in the world and with one the largest proportion of vaccinations in mandatory regime. However, the trends over the recent ten years have shown that the immunization coverage is declining, and at the same time, the population has become more hesitant about vaccines. The article discusses the following issues: whether and to what extent the national immunization strategy works effectively; what is the effectiveness of the mandatory vaccination regime and whether this approach helps to achieve the coverage levels recommended by experts and the World Health Organization. The main criticisms of the country’s immunization policy, the demands of hesitant parents and citizens and the institutional response to these sentiments are expressed and analysed. An important limitation of the suggested analysis is that it does not consider the current crisis with the Covid-19 epidemic, the national vaccination policy against that infectious disease, the immunization coverage and the attitudes of Bulgarians to the new coronavirus vaccines. However, researchers and readers can see here some of the conditions for the possibility of today’s health crisis and mass resistance to the Covid-19 vaccines.
