Summary/Abstract: Religious life in Byzantium in the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries was as complex and turbulent as political life. The political interests of some emperors and their interference in the affairs of the Church sometimes negatively affected the conduct of church life in the empire, producing serious disturbances that led to the emergence of rival factions and even schism within the Constantinople Church. The purpose of this article is to show the aspects that preceded the Lyon council. The objectives of the study are to identify the main stages that formed the basis of such a council. After the sad episode recorded in history in 1054 by the Great Schism between East and West followed several stages of testing a unity between the two cultural-religious environments. Through this study we want to present the stage of trying to unite at the Council of Lyon.
