Summary/Abstract: The accident at the V. I. Lenin nuclear power plant in Chernobyl (26 April 1986) is considered one of the worst global environmental disasters. Because of this event, social, political, ethical and environmental attitudes towards nuclear energy were permanently changed. The consequences of Chernobyl are still being felt today. The continuing relevance and interest in the issue is also documented by media production. At the forefront is the 2019 5-part US-British co-production series Chernobyl. The miniseries by director J. Renck and screenwriter C. Mazin reconstructs the course of the nuclear accident and the subsequent attempts to solve it. The series was highly praised by critics and won several major awards. In the study I focused on the audience's reception of Chernobyl (2019) as recorded in user reviews on the Czecho-Slovak Film Database from 2019 to 2022. On the material of 183 user reviews, I identified seven categories through which not only the series but also the environmental event was evaluated. The categories examined were: 1) artistic aspects of the series; 2) language; 3) reflection of the historical period; 4) characterization of the Chernobyl accident; 5) comparison of the series within contemporary film/series production; 6) recommendations and perspectives for the use of the series in practice; and 7) overall user ratings. Based on a qualitative approach to the material, its analysis, comparison and interpretation in media, communication and extralingual context, the aim of the study was to present a comprehensive picture of the media processed, topical environmental and political issues from the point of view of a specific group of recipients.
