THE ARCHETYPAL COUPLE IN EMINESCU´S PERSPECTIVE

Summary/Abstract: The theme of the archetypal couple is one that is often approached by Mihai Eminescu, both in his poems and his prose. The writer manages to capture the extraordinary process that allows lovers to find themselves in each other, and therefore to recapture, through pure love, the lost privileges of Adam and Eve. In order to attain such a high status and, basically, recreate the primordial androgynous being, the two have to go through several challenges – for example, they must be able to reconcile their different perspectives on life and the purpose of the human being (the man is represented as the voice of reason, while the woman is the representation of feelings and emotion), they must be willing to isolate themselves from the society they live in (true love cannot manifest itself under all the norms imposed by society), and sometimes they must find a way to escape the passage of time (usually by traveling to a location described as an earthly paradise).
