Summary/Abstract: Following the example of the USSR – the state of „the most reading na- tion of the world”, the ruling power in Bulgaria undertook the aim to reform the educational system, to battle illiteracy and to force the masses to love books. The key mission of the newspapers and magazines in the country was to propagandize the necessity of reading among the greatest possible audience. With this aim in mind they regularly published excerpts of literary works, information on new books, materials on what heroes of socialist labor read, etc. In the process of forming the „ideal reader” photography played an important and irreplaceable role – the photo illustrations „irrefutably” proved that the citizens of socialist society read everywhere and at any time; they read political, technical and art literature; read with understanding and commitment, with pleasure and admiration.
