Summary/Abstract: The effect of changes in contemporary reality is the need for a new look at the functioning of a region. It is necessary to identify not only a region itself as a new subject of global economy but also the sources that shape its situation. Apart from the obvious (such as globalization or crisis) there should be also pointed out the unique potential which is very often intangible. This raises the need for redefinition of rules of its development.
