Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes A. Mickiewicz’s twin sonnets “Do Niemna” from 1822 and 1826. It describes their special and existential culture symbolism (river, meadow, childhood, adolescence) and symbolism of tradition (Petrarch’s poetic ethos, Laura’s symbolism). The former text communicates the unity of poetry and life. The subject experiences the ritual of transition, acquires metaphysical and visionary dimension, becomes a participant of existence and a heir of values. He defines himself as a national and cultural poet. The latter text is less sensual, more distant from that process.
