Summary/Abstract: In this paper, the figure passus balcanicus is considered a signifier of the Balkan scale and Mokranjac’s opus. With the terminological distinction of this figure, the author tries to position it in geographical and scale-tonal boundaries, on the one hand, and to connect it with the long history of rhetorical figures, pianto / sigh gestures, and passus duriusculus, which contain catabasic movements, on the other. In order to prove the universality of these figures that connote sadness and grief, the author refers to the theory of embodiment and conceptual metaphors, as well as Mokranjac’s Garlands, in which passus balcanicus is ubiquitous. This leads the discussion in the direction of re-examining theoretical writings on the Balkan scale, and opening perspectives for further research of the figure passus balcanicus in Balkan musical heritage.
