Summary/Abstract: Conceived as cultural and aesthetic projections of humans of nature, landscapes lend themselves to a double process of “artialisation” (Alain Roger). Producers and observers, creators and spectators/readers, incessantly, and often unknowingly, contribute to the redesign of the surrounding scenery. Probably inherited from R. L. Girardin’s model (in De la Composition des paysages), the landscape portrayal of an author such as Théophile Gautier, a writer who knew how to “see as an artist” (Paolo Tortonese), proves to be doubly revealing, both because it informs the self-perception of the aesthetic code and because it helps readers become more sensitive to the aesthetic representation of the author. Gautier’s landscapes allow us to consider whether Horace’s Ut pictura poesis could be reinterpreted as Ut pictura paradisus.
