Summary/Abstract: Since Homeric times, attempts to uncover the whereabouts of Hell have resulted in further crevices and fractures, in difficulties which seem doomed to remain hazy and inaccessible: fissures, deadly, obscure, muddy waters which depict islands, lagoons or the edges of the world. From La Fin de Satan to J. Cocteau’s Zone d’Orphée, all catabases suggest a symbolism of evil associated to dark, malefic places of gloomy depths... Et nox facta est... The question arises, where does the 21st century stand in this regard? And can we ascertain whether the ancient entry into Hell has been transmuted, transfigured or transformed? What has happened to the symbolism of evil, to these mythical enclaves where fear rubs shoulders with terror? Could we really ascertain the whereabouts of Hell? Two authors can help us relocate Hell in today’s symbolism of evil.
