Monograph: Music preferences and mental properties of adolescents in the light of chosen research

Summary/Abstract: Music plays important part in adolescents’ life. Young people tend to identify with the artists and their lifestyle; they also build friendships and social groups based on music preferences as crucial criterion. Teenagers consider music as their passion, and they use it not only for fun, but also to release tension and express emotions. Current research shows some diagnostic potential of music preferences. Teachers and other care givers are not always aware of this fact and tend to avoid or criticize music genres that they do not enjoy or understand. This article provides with overview of the newest research results regarding music preferences and its relation to personality and substance abuse vulnerability. It discusses the findings of the studies presented and concludes that the better we know the music of young people the closer to their world experiences we can get.
