Summary/Abstract: The article outlines the defining aspects of the Jewish press in Romania during the second half of the 19th century. Obviously this press mirrors the Jewish minority's difficult evolution by the side of the Romanian majority in the latter's uneasy progress towards state independence. Two stages can be detected in this process: the first follows the Mendelssohnian Haskalah's principles of integration, while the second faces the emergence of Journals influenced by the Wissenschaft des Judentums cultural movement.
