Summary/Abstract: Nongovernmental nonprofit organizations are becoming more and more prominent social actors in today's world. Their relevance is increasingly visible especially in the sociology-political and economical arenas. Following the collapse of the communist regime in 1989, the voluntary sector re-emerged in Romania showing impressive dynamics: more than 62,000 organizations are registered in Romania today, with more than 21,000 active organizations. Like in other post-socialist countries in the region, this is the result of relatively recent social coagulation processes taking place in the complex environment of an emerging civil society, which is filling the space between the market and the state. Besides the important volume of volunteer work whose value is difficult to assess in monetary terms, the non-governmental sector in Romania is an important employer, providing a large number of jobs. This coagulation and development of the nongovernmental sector, as an alternative to the market and public institutions, prompts the need of an analysis of the functionalities and eventual dysfunctionalities featuring their strategy approach within nongovernmental organizations. And, also, its particularities compared to commercial, for profit, organizations.
