Summary/Abstract: The term “sustainable development” has emerged in terms of awareness that planet's resources are not inexhaustible and that the current development path of human society tends to lead to the ruin of civilizations because it generates negative phenomena, among which social conflict and environmental degradation are the most severe. Given the economic role forests have in different parts of the world, especially the input in the context of exceptional ecological degradation of an increasingly fragile environment, ‘Sustainable Forest Management’ is considered to be one of the main ways of achieving sustainable development of society overall. To ensure the continuity of forests, as well as their protection and enforcement functions of production, recovery must be carried out for forests and degraded land and also must be agreed by the forest’s respective owners. In order to extend forested areas, in accordance with the sustainable development strategy of Romanian forestry, the identification of degraded land that can be included in the forest fund and reforested (especially in areas with forest vegetation deficit) has become a priority. In the wider context of sustainable development and spatial planning, this paper is an effort to present a view upon Sustainable Forest Management, relying on an environmental economics approach. The research also comprises a study-case on forest regeneration in the last 20 years. Its results can prove to be useful for decisionmakers and academia, while it can also be expanded further to include, for example, critical studies of existing policies between the national and European levels or comparative analyses of regions within the country.
