Summary/Abstract: This paper examines the social significance and role of museums and museum collections. One of the new conceptions of the museum, which appears as a reaction to the crisis of the museum overall, understands the museum as a medium. Museums understood as media have the task of conveying different types of messages and to influence the formation of public opinion and the articulation of the public view. All rules that apply to other media apply to the museum which is understood as a medium. The democratic museum tries to understand the society and the reality in which it currently finds itself. The museum does not shrink away from reality, contrary to that, it tries to face it. The democratic Museum tries to communicate with the people of today. It is democratic precisely because of this communication. Truly democratic museums are only possible in a society in which the media have the task of conveying different, often conflicting, social interests and views on the world – in a society that is ready for dialogue. This paper also analyzes the significance of the formation of museums and museum collections in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s local communities. The key causes of the lack of systematic and planned care for cultural heritage in local communities are identified and listed.
