Aspects of Translating the „Bible” of Blaj (1795)

Summary/Abstract: This paper is a comparative analysis between two fundamental biblical texts: the “Bible” from Bucharest (1688, the first translation of the Bible into Romanian, and the “Bible” from Blaj (1795), the revised edition of the Bible from 1688 and, at the same time, a new translation The first translation of the Bible into a culture is considered to be one of the most important moments in the evolution of a civilization. For the Romanian culture the first translation of the Bible began only in the 17th century. The Romanian biblical translations are done on the one hand, after the Greek text of the Septuagint, the representative text for the Orthodox Church, and, on the other hand, after the Latin text of the Vulgata, the representative text of the Catholic and Greek-Catholic Church. The paper deals mostly with the translating problems identified in the books of Genesis and Exodus and concentrates on the translation differences resulted from the comparison between the “Bible” from Bucharest (1688) and the “Bible” from Blaj (1795) with a constant reference on the Old Greek source-texts: The Septuagint, a Frankfurt edition from 1597, and the 1709 Franeker edition. Considering the variety of the translation problems that are specific for this type of text, I chose for this article a number of the most representative loan translations, which I have analyzed from a philological point of view. For a better perspective on the translation phenomenon, I have chosen other Romanian biblical translations that bring more information on the way in which the biblical text was received over the centuries. For the first comparison used partial translations as Ms.45 and Ms. 4389 (Old Testament), total translations as: the Romanian translation from 1856-1856; 1865-1867, 1914, and modern translations represented by the translation belonging Bartolomeu Valeriu Anania.
