Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the relation between Carl Schmitt’s theory of the political and a chapter from the Bulgarian historical novel “Zhelezniyat svetilnik”. Lazar Glaushev, the main character, is involved in a fi erce verbal confrontation with the greek bishop about the future of the Bulgarian people, who is still under the reign of the Ottoman sultan. My argument is that in the development of the debate between the two, we can fi nd the main pillars of Carl Schmitt’s theory, which are the “friend/foe” dichotomy, the being of one’s nation in its own sovereign manner and the willingness to engage in a battle to save your nation’s existence.
