Summary/Abstract: Political realism is one of the main theoretical approaches towards international relations. However, the basis of the theory, provided by Hans J. Morgenthau, is underpinned by arguments that should not belong to the realist tradition. The main argument is that the core abstract principles of political realism should be reviewed. The reformulated realism is structured around the main idea of the political defined as in Carl Schmitt’s theory – as a friend / enemy distinction. This leads to the argument of the political as an ontological principle, which I imply as the new fundamental concept of the theory. These changes will make realism more logically coherent and more theoretically rigorous.
