Summary/Abstract: This paper attempts to define the main traits of youth subculture, focusing on the context that engenders its emergence and sustains the existence of it. The relationships holding between youth subculture and the hegemonic mainstream culture, the stylistic dimension of any subcultural agency, the meaning of rebellion paralleled by eccentric fun are key concepts to be tackled in this essay. These general terms are further applied so as to provide ideological frameworks for Romanian and American youth subcultures and the literatures highly influenced by them.
