A MAGICAL LITERARY JOURNEY IN SEARCH OF THE TRUTH: BRUJA OR CURANDERA?

Summary/Abstract: The present study analyzes the stages of a magical journey in search of the truth described in Rudolfo Anaya’s novel entitled ”Bless Me, Ultima”. The female protagonist is Ultima and we are taken on a magical journey getting to know her. The question that rises is about whether she is a force of good or evil, helping the other characters or just following her own agenda. She acts as a guide to young Antonio, getting him ready for the real world and its challenges. The present paper highlights the feeling of uncertainty if she is a ”curandera” or a ”bruja”. We are aided in the quest for truth by all the descriptions of Ultima given by the other characters, her relationships with the ”llano” and the fact that her title is ”la Grande”.
