Summary/Abstract: Shihāb al-Dīn al-Nuwayrī's work, The Ultimate Ambition in the Arts of Erudition, written in the early 14th century, presents a series of natural phenomena, which he attempts to interpret and explain them on the basis of the knowledge held at that time by the Islamic World. In the first part of his work, entitled On the Heavens and the Earth, the author also describes some atmospheric phenomena (clouds, lightning, thunder, rainbow and wind) and the so-called seven climates. According to the description, these seven climates are distributed latitudinally north of the Equator, in Asia, Africa and Europe, being bounded on the west by the Encircling Sea. Within these climates are specified the territories included (from east to west), the number of cities and some characteristics of the inhabitants.
