Pilot study on patients' attitudes towards medical abortion

Summary/Abstract: The results of the survey conducted with female patients determine their attitude towards medical abortion. This is extremely important for the introduction of the method in Bulgaria. It is true that doctors, with their authority, can often impose their opinion on patients, but if the latter do not have a positive opinion and attitude towards medical abortion, it will not be possible to start using it widely. The opinion of 124 patients after medical abortion performed by them was studied. The survey is anonymous and was done with their consent, at their last visit of the procedure to the attending physician to confirm a full expulsion. The survey cards were collected in the period April 2018-December 2018. The questionnaires were given to the women by the doctors, who in turn confirmed that they practice medical abortion. As the age and number of previous pregnancies increase, the effectiveness of drug abortion will decrease, but it is an affordable and desirable alternative for these women. The group of youngest patients under the age of 18 is not as large as the public may think. Young people are well-informed about contraception, which is causing the overall level of abortion worldwide to decline. The results show that most drug abortions are performed in larger settlements. This is mainly due to the deployment of health- care professionals offering the service. Another reason is the tendency of young people of reproductive age to seek economic and social opportunities for themselves and their future generation in more developed large settlements. However, the method is also available to women from smaller towns and villages, although they may have to travel to a nearby larger city to undergo the procedure.
