Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to undertake a study for awareness of insured patients about the possibilities that provides the voluntary health insurance in Bulgaria. Materials and methods. We used the method of direct individual anonymous survey written on paper. A special questionnaire for evaluating information the respondents have about the thisness and possibilities of this specific type of insurance. Results. The total number of respondents was 490 people. The results show that certain gaps in public awareness of the thisness and possibilities of the voluntary health insurance sector. Very good and relatively well informed are about one quarter (23.9%) and relatively uninformed and misinformed is larger percentage of respondents. Better informed are men (25.8%) than women (21.9%). Conclusion. In order to ensure support from the public opinion, it is necessary to intensify the communication policy of voluntary health insurance companies by expanding activities in public relations.
