The informational, documentational and epistemic role of bibliography of the content of local journals (on the example of the bibliography of the content of the “Zeszyty Żagańskie”)

Summary/Abstract: The following article was written as part of the author’s work for the publication Bibliography of the content of the “Żagań Journals” (Wroclaw 2020) and is a general reflection on the place of bibliography of periodicals and newspapers in today’s information environment (specifically that of Poland). Although articles from such publications convey and solidify information more efficiently than in the case of compact publishing, while simultaneously remaining “hidden” in bibliographical classifications (such as the title of the periodical), few countries choose to conduct a general, current bibliography of such sources, whereas the countries that have implemented this (such as Poland), emphasise its far reaching selectivity (the choice of materials is dependent on the size of the periodical industry in the country, the release of current field bibliographies, the financial and staffing limitations and common methodologies). For this reason, the bibliographical registry of periodical content must be supported by current regional and field bibliographies. During the work on the bibliography of the “Żagań Journals”, the benefits of this publication’s layout (which applied the principles of “new regionalism”) were observed, as well as the need to conduct further documentational work. For this reason, the annexes attached to the paper include the layout of the Bibliography of the content of the “Żagań Journals” as an example of a bibliography layout for regional/local periodical, and a program for documentary work for the Żagań region
