Summary/Abstract: The article consists of two parts: the first – The Decline of the Ethical Aspect – presents the most important element of the current ethical situation. It presents the fact that, because of changes taking place in social reality, the means that hitherto supported the process of the formation of an individual’s self-knowledge and autonomy of action, are now disappearing. A consequence of the elimination of ethical values from the individual’s life is an ever further reaching process of disintegration of identity, which fosters consumerist attitudes. The second part – Working on Oneself – shows means of building up and preserving one’s identity. The most important of these means is the obligation of knowing oneself. Self-knowledge is the necessary condition of overcoming the crisis, an obligation to oneself that does not consist in possession of a theory confirmed by facts concerning ourselves. Finally, the article contains an assessments of the chances of putting these indications into practice.
