Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article was to present the problem of suicides and suicide attempts in penitentiary units, as well as to present suicide prevention activities in this area. It also touched on the legal regulations in force in the Polish legal order ensuring the safety of inmates in penitentiary units. Attention was also paid to the risk factors of suicidal behavior occurring in prisoners and forms of counteracting this type of behavior were indicated. Another issue taken up in the study was to indicate the elements of the suicidal prevention system implemented in the Polish prison system. The main research methods used in the article are literature analysis, comparison, inference and induction. In their considerations, the authors analyzed and compared the statistics of suicides and suicide attempts in penitentiary units in 2017-2021. The preliminary analysis allowed to formulate a research question: How does suicide prevention affect the safety of inmates? Corresponding to the research problem posed, the following hypothesis was adopted: suicidal prevention through the use of preventive mechanisms significantly reduces the possibility of inmates committing suicide. Despite the measures taken in this area, the problem of undertaking suicide in prison isolation facilities is still present. It is necessary to introduce new changes or improve the mechanisms of existing measures to improve the level of security of inmates.
