Summary/Abstract: During the communist regime, many writers were imprisoned and their writings banned. They suffered not only deprivation of liberty but many beats with bestiality, cold, hunger, humiliation, and the main part, the destruction of their writings. Religious poets were the main target. Religious convictions threatened a system that promoted atheism and people devoted to the system. The Romanian elite was imprisoned in Aiud, Jilava, or Ocnele Mari. Some lost their lives like Vasile Militaru, and Daniil Sandu Tudor, or became seriously ill. Poetry was the way to escape the immediate reality in those difficult conditions. The lyrics weren’t written on paper. They were written on their memory or their cellmates. Poetry was the only consolation and the way to maintain self-consciousness.
