Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to define the relationship between the Church’s missionary activity and interreligious dialogue in the light of the documents of the Magisterium Ecclesiae and Catholic theology. At the beginning it discusses the concept and purpose of mission and shows the new perspective on non-Christian religions brought by the Second Vatican Council. According to the Council’s teaching, the Church is the universal sacrament of salvation (LG 48), then the relationship between the Church and salvation is shown. The last two sections discuss the theological basis of interreligious dialogue and define the relationship of dialogue to preaching. The author concludes that there is no contradiction between dialogue and preaching, and that Church documents situate dialogue within Christian mission. At the same time these documents emphasise that dialogue has a value in itself. Although dialogue and preaching meet and intersect each other, they are not identical. As a result the Church does not see a contradiction between the proclamation of Jesus Christ and interreligious dialogue and wishes that “the two retain their close relationship and at the same time their distinctiveness” (RMis, no. 55).
