Summary/Abstract: This article examines the so called Berkovitza period in the life and literary works of the prominent Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov. He spent only one year in the town under Kom peak but this period played a vital role in his life and creative path. There Vazov created one of his best works, accumulated material and gained experience for his future literary masterpieces. Time spent by the writer in Berkovitza left durable traces in the minds of local people and had a great impact on the development of the town situated in the West Stara Planina. The house where the poet lived is currently a museum and one of the significant cultural sites in Northwest Bulgaria. Vazov’s impressions of Berkovitza, Petrohan Pass, Kom peak, Ginci village, etc. were described in his novel New Earth. It is a novel of both huge literary and historical significance as an important memoir source. It has been quoted and widely used by historians and researchers of the region’s past.
