The Stereotype of Saint Kinga in Polish Folk Tradition

Summary/Abstract: On the basis of the reconstruction of the stereotype of Saint Kinga, the author claims that according to folk people, Saint Kinga is responsible for importing salt deposits to Poland, and this information can be found in many legends. The material base of the article are folk texts of various genres, such as legends, belief stories, records of beliefs, and the cognitive definition was used for the analysis. In numerous stories, the escape of Saint Kinga from the Tatars or the Swedes is presented. During this escape unusual events happen. In the Krakowskie region, Saint Kinga is venerated as the patron saint of miners. According to folk tales, Saint Kinga is said to heal the sick, fight demons and increase the fertility of crop plants.
