Summary/Abstract: The article traces the dramatic vicissitudes of the life of the Bulgarian artist Georgi Papazov (Bulgaria, 1894–France, 1972). He was among the first artists to develop automatic painting as a way of overriding previously established techniques in drawing. Along with Juan Miró, André Masson, and Max Ernst, Malkin emerged as one of the first representatives of Surrealism as a movement in art. However, Papazov chose not to become an official member of the Surrealists so that he could freely experiment with other artistic styles without compromising his position in the group. He pursued his own interests in the art world, ranging from automatic painting and surrealism to expressionism, lyrical abstraction, and color-field painting. Shocked by their sectarianism, he refused to join the movement, which cost him complete neglect by historians of surrealism, as Jean-Paul Crispell wrote.
