Summary/Abstract: Since the industrial revolution and the acceleration of technical progress, military organizations have been faced with the problem of how to adapt as quickly as possible to the changing battlefield and to adapt their armaments, procedures, tactics, operational art and strategies to the possibilities and requirements offered by technology. Today's military is a conservative bureaucratic organization by nature, and this makes innovation difficult. It is difficult to prepare for a future war because past experience may not be a reliable guide. However, we can probably learn from history how to adapt and renew as effectively as possible when the war has already started. To this end, the events of the First World War more than a hundred years ago are still of interest. This article summarizes recent research on adaptation and innovation and the development of tactics and the art of war before and during the First World War, and discusses whether there are universal patterns that would help modern armed forces, including the Estonian Defense Forces, to be successful in renewing the art of war.
