Summary/Abstract: The process of romanisation was determined by different factors. Not only that the romans didn't have one and the some concept for organising their different provinces, but also the provinves with their inhabitants presented different realities. That is why we can distinguish different graduations in the process of romanisation. Comparing the provinces of Gallia and Dacia, the author shows that the time of conquest, the function of the province as well as the pre-roman structures influenced the structure and intensity of roman urbanisation. The urban settlements of Dacia depended highely on colonists and the roman army, while in Gallia, the urbanisation was based on the local population. In conclusion, the urban culture in Dacia came to an end together with the retreat of the roman army.
