Summary/Abstract: The formation of "Greater Romania", the union of Transylvania and Bassarabia with the Romanian state, was analysed mostly from the perspective of the "national liberation", as the result of the national aspirations of the romanian people. But the integration of the two provinces did not take place as smoothly as it is presented in the romanian national historiography. Different concepts, reaching from sovereignty to federalisation or autonomy opposed the centralistic expansion of the romanian state. In both cases, the regional elites had substantial reservations against the centralism of the romanian state. The integration of Bassarabia and Transylvania in the centralistic structures of Romania took place under the military presence of romanian troops and the international recognition of the annexion the two provinces.
