The vocabulary of Spanish for foreigners (ELE) books edited in Romania during communism, between adaptation and relevance

Summary/Abstract: In the history of Romanian communism, the 70’s were marked, among others, by a certain liberalization and openness towards the West. Given this context, there were edited a series of foreign languages books, among them the Spanish language, dedicated to the public system student, emphasizing the national identity of Romanians, the communist values and the achievements of the Party. That is why, through the content and the graphic support, these books, which had a design that was controlled by the Party, were transformed into a political and ideological propaganda tool. This paper analyses these Spanish for foreigners (ELE) books, and it is focused on vocabulary and semantic competence. Following a corpus analysis, apart from the vocabulary that is marked from an ideological perspective, we identify some lexical elements which are not necessarily related to the student’s environment and his age, interests or cognitive development. A large part of that vocabulary used for ideological reasons do not belong to the basic Spanish vocabulary (L1 or L2), so it does not match the student’s level.
