The Definite Article in Bulgarian and its Functional Equivalents in Greek (Based on a Corpus of Translated Texts)

Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of a study whose aim is to identify the functional equivalents of the Bulgarian definite article in Greek based on a corpus of excerpts from literary works in Bulgarian and their Greek translations. To this end a set of functional equivalents of the definite article has been identified, including the dominant functional equivalent in Greek, namely the Greek definite article. The other functional equivalents of the Bulgarian definite article in Greek are also analysed, indicating the specific instances of their use. Special attention is devoted to the fact that compared with 2280 uses of the definite article in Bulgarian, the Greek translations contain 3514 uses - i.e. almost a third more - which, in the vast majority of cases, are used as equivalents of the Bulgarian zero article. Such a large discrepancy necessitated a detailed investigation of the cases where the Greek definite article is used as equivalent of the Bulgarian zero article. The results of this study are presented in full in the article. All these facts once again confirm the earlier conclusion about the much broader use of the definite article in Greek compared with Bulgarian. This is due to the higher degree of article grammaticalisation in Greek which, in contrast to Bulgarian, determines its mandatory use in a large number of cases.
