Summary/Abstract: The article treats the dominant trends in the development of modern Greek theater in the late 19th and early 20th century in the context of efforts to Europeanize the modern Greek scene in the horizons of modernism in theater. During this period, the modern Greek theater was faced with solving several general problems: overcoming the emphasis on the effort to read the dramatic text accurately through the archaic language form of the Greek language, incomprehensible to the majority of the Greek public; and aspiration to language reform in the direction of democratization of theatrical expression; introduction and imposition of the modern European techniques of professional directing and acting, as well as of the stage interpretation; searching for one’s own, authentic reading of ancient dramatic texts and over-coming the direct imitation of European models. The solution of these general problems outlines at least three significant phenomena that characterize the development of modern Greek theater in this transitional period: the institutionalization of the New Greek theater scene through the emergence of two important theatrical formations - New Stage (1901–1906) and The Royal Theater (1901–1908), which runs parallel to; the professionalization of the modern Greek theater both in terms of directing and acting techniques, and the approach to scenography; stage interpretation of ancient texts indoors, and giving them a new topical sound through the models of modernity. Leading in these processes are two large-scale theatrical figures – Konstantinos Christomanos and Thomas Oikonomou.
